Balanced signal transmission means that the audio signal is sent through two separate circuits, one of which is a mirrored version of the original signal. In this case, the shielding does not need to act as a reference for the signal, which helps reduce interference picked up through the shield.
When the signal is decoded, this interference is canceled out by inverting the mirrored signal and combining it with the original, resulting in a signal that is twice as strong while the interference is eliminated. In a well-functioning balanced system, interference can be up to 60 dB weaker than in an unbalanced system.
